ABOUT ME

Derek is a marketing leader who has worked through the basics, giving him a strong perspective on how things get done while transforming himself into a strategic thinker and leader.  His marketing career actually started back in high school, promoting his family’s bakery and restaurant – he was the only 16 year-old going to marketing seminars put on by the Chamber of Commerce!  After a short stint at Rhode Island School of Design for graphic design, he switched to marketing and stuck with it. He got his core CPG training at Dean Foods, where he worked on almost every aspect of consumer marketing: in-store, sampling, events, sales support, coupons, packaging, consumer research, data analysis, new product development, and promotions.  Building off of that “in the trenches” experience, his career has been filled with leading a great deal of transformational work in highly commoditized categories, including multiple brand relaunches, several product line redesigns, numerous new product launches, and experience with disruptive innovation.  He’s worked on local, regional and national brands, and has helped take several brands from regional to national.  Nearly every position he’s held didn’t exist before he filled it and he thrives on leading in that undefined space. His accomplishments led him to leadership positions with where he developed and set strategies while mentoring up and coming talent. Most recently at Keurig Green Mountain, he worked in product management and innovation, led the Green Mountain Coffee brand onto the national stage, and spearheaded the marketing and sales strategy for the non-coffee K-Cup portfolio.  As a collaborative leader who has been a part of small marketing teams in growth mode, he has an entrepreneurial spirit and prides himself on being able to build extremely strong relationships with cross-functional partners and vendors.  Sales trusts him to present directly to customers, agencies have cried when he announced he was leaving, and other functional leaders know that he “gets it.”  He has a clear passion for the food and beverage category, and while too many people call themselves “foodies” these days, he lives it as a KCBS Certified Barbecue Judge, pitmaster of an award-winning barbecue team, and an active writer of Yelp! reviews.
