Krannert Graduate School of Management — Purdue University – West Lafayette, Indiana
The Krannert Executive Education Programs at Purdue University emerged as a trendsetter in executive education in 1983, establishing a standard of excellence and innovation for executives around the world. The Executive Master’s Program-initially known as the EMS (Executive Master of Science in Management) Program-was developed specifically for mid-level managers and managers-to-be who are unable to attend classes on a full-time basis to get their master’s degree in business. It was, and continues to be, a creative alternative to traditional Executive MBA programs. Designed to attract students from all over the U.S., the EMS Program was the first of its kind in its use of electronic communication by email to allow students to stay in contact with each other and with the faculty during off-campus periods. Now, nearly 20 years later, the program has moved to a more sophisticated and comprehensive electronic network, including Internet access, with computer-based applications to assist in solving business problems, thereby enhancing the learning experience both off and on campus. The Executive Master’s in Business Program (EMB): This program is the successor to the EMS Program, now that the Krannert School has changed the degree designation to an MBA for all its master’s programs in business. Unlike conventional MBA programs, the EMB program has a schedule which makes it possible for participants to be drawn from a wide geographical area. There are six two-week residencies spread across 22 months, from orientation to graduation, coupled with Internet-supported off-campus assignments between residencies. This design allows EMB participants to meet their educational goals while simultaneously fulfilling their ongoing job responsibilities. It attracts both a national and international student population, providing a diverse learning environment. The program begins each July with an orientation session where the participants are introduced to the coursework, the instructors, and the Purdue information technology system. The courses in the program have an applied policy-making orientation and make extensive use of cases and other experiential material. Computer-based analysis is a key component of most courses. Students enter together, take the same set of courses together, and graduate together in this cohort program. To heighten the learning experience, the last residency is an international trip with class sessions, plant visits, and speakers from government agencies and multinational firms. Both Asia and Europe have been the sites of recent trips. Upon completion of the program, the Master of Business Administration degree is awarded.
Marshall School of Business — University of Southern California – Los Angeles, California
The Marshall EMBA Program pioneered a successful thematic MBA curriculum that gets to the heart of issues with which senior managers and seasoned professionals grapple. We use a teaching approach that emphasizes the importance of functional interaction. Moreover, we concentrate learning objectives on the “interrelatedness” of business functions as opposed to a deep theoretical learning of individual functions. We deliver an effective blend of theory and practice through carefully sequenced individual class sessions. There are no stand-alone courses in statistics, economics, accounting or any of the traditional business school disciplines. Rather, you are exposed to several functional areas simultaneously allowing you to gain useful cross-functional skills. The skill set you develop in the first-year includes cash flow, value chain, and product life-cycle analysis. In the second year, you apply skills learned in the first year to issues such as understanding key international financial market relationships and strategic planning for growth. While working full-time, you will complete the Marshall EMBA Program in twenty-two months. Classes meet one full day per week on alternating Fridays and Saturdays. We believe that weekly contact assures continuity in learning. Class meetings include three off-campus residential sessions; two domestic and one international. The two domestic off-site sessions, of six and two days respectively, are scheduled for the beginning of year one and the end of year two. The international off-site is a seven-day overseas study scheduled for the fall of year two. We break for the summer between the first and second year for ten weeks.

Robert H. Smith School of Business — University of Maryland – College Park, Maryland
The Smith EMBA is built on a new structure. You won’t sit passively as instructors lecture. Instead, you’ll find yourself in discussions and conversations with a faculty that is unequalled in the region for breadth and depth of research and communications. And you will interact with special guests. Business and thought leaders from around the world. You will sharpen your understanding of business foundations and you will take on projects that are as real as what your company is facing at this moment in time– not some time in the future, or never at all. And that is why The Robert H. Smith EMBA is only for executives who believe that something different is needed. Executives who sense that what worked before is a start, but is no longer enough. The Smith EMBA can be conceptualized in three unique but interrelated and dependent components: The Foundation, The Project, and Mastery. Each component is vitally important on its own. But they don’t stand alone. Nor are they presented in a linear fashion. Courses include Accounting, Financial Management, Global Economics and Public Policy, Information Systems, Marketing Management, Supply Chain Management, and so on. These subjects become more than fundamentals, they become the foundation for a lifetime of reaching higher. And, they will become second nature to you. Kind of like ice skating to a hockey player.
