Company History

Commonwealth Brands, Inc. was formed in 1991 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In 1996, we acquired a cigarette manufacturing facility in Reidsville, North Carolina, and a group of cigarette brands divested by Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. in connection with its acquisition of American Tobacco Company.  Through this acquisition, Commonwealth Brands, Inc. inherited several brands including Montclair, Malibu and Riviera.

In 1994, Commonwealth Brands, Inc. began manufacturing USA Gold. First introduced on a limited basis, USA Gold has grown to be one of the nation’s best selling brands, in the United States.*

In November 1998, various United States territories and 46 states entered into the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) with the then four largest tobacco companies. Commonwealth Brands, Inc. was the first tobacco products’ manufacturer that chose to voluntarily join the Master Settlement Agreement with the states. We comply with the restrictions on marketing and advertising contained in the Agreement, including the MSA’s prohibition on marketing to Youth.

In September 2005, Commonwealth Brands, Inc. became the exclusive distributor of BaliShag cigarette tobacco and McClintock make-your-own (MYO) products in the United States. On July 1, 2007, Commonwealth Brands, Inc. subsequently purchased the brand rights to manufacture BaliShag and McClintock from Peter Stokkebye.

On April 1, 2007, Commonwealth Brands, Inc. was acquired by Imperial Tobacco PLC headquartered in Bristol, United Kingdom. Imperial Tobacco is one of the world’s leading international tobacco companies. It manufactures, markets and sells a comprehensive range of cigarettes, tobaccos, rolling papers, filter tubes and cigars in over 160 countries worldwide, has 40,000 employees and operates manufacturing sites across the globe.

In September 2007, Robert Burton Associates, LTD (RBA LTD), an Imperial Tobacco company, located in New Jersey, was merged into Commonwealth Brands, Inc. As a result, Commonwealth Brands, Inc. now sells all Premier Supermatic products including cigarette rolling tobacco, cigarette rolling papers, various cigarette tubes and tube-filling machines. Popular cigarette rolling paper brands include Joker and E-Z Wider.

In May 2008, Commonwealth Brands, Inc. purchased Lignum-2, further extending its share in both cigarette and cigarette tobacco.

Commonwealth Brands, Inc. is currently the fourth largest cigarette manufacturer in the U.S.
