Is Your Job Search Stuck In A Rut?

You know how it is, your wheels are spinning, but you aren’t moving forward?  The problem is, this isn’t your car we’re talking about – you can’t just call a tow truck.  You are probably a great problem solver; and yet a brilliant solution hasn’t flashed in front of your eyes.  So, what do you do when you aren’t getting interviews, much less a job offer?

The Answer:

STOP doing what you’re doing! Stop everything.  When what you are doing isn’t working, you have to stop what you’re doing and start doing things differently.  We can be a tough, stubborn group sometimes.  When you aren’t getting the results you want, you simply can’t keep doing the same thing and expecting different results.

I know the most common place to look for change in your job search is in the resume.  That might be too easy of a solution to pursue simply because it’s so visible.  It’s also probably not your problem. If you’re going to triage your resume, do it last.  Look at the rest of what you’re doing.  If you’re only looking at posted jobs, start working with a recruiter.  If you’re sending out 20 resumes a week, increase it to 40.  If you’re barely networking, get on the phone right now.

With your job search, there are many knobs and dials you could potentially turn to get different results.  This isn’t an exact science; it’s more of an art form.  The one thing you have to get clear on is to give each thing you do enough time and effort to start yielding results.  Once you have and aren’t getting the type of results you want, stop what you’re doing and start doing things differently.
